This year, both Texas Frightmare Weekend and Fan Expo Dallas
were the same weekend. I also had a buddy from college come visit. He comes for
Texas Frightmare. It made for a busy weekend.
I spent time at both conventions.
I had a good time. It was less stressful
than I expected. While both conventions had a nice guest list, neither had a
list of guests that was dominating. I picked up 8 autographs from Frightmare
and 15 from Fan Expo. Since Fan Expo is much larger than Frightmare, I expected to get more autographs from that show.
I know fans for both conventions are partisan. Reading their
comments online is dull reading. It’s full of finger pointing and oaths of loyalty.
It’s a good reminder that most people posting on social media are much younger
than you assume; if not chronologically then mentally younger.
I spent Friday night at Frightmare. I got there late. Parking
was a mess. The last mile (inside the airport) took about 45 minutes. I felt
sorry for travelers trying to make a flight. They had no idea why traffic was horrible.
Frightmare does need to move to a larger venue, even if they
don’t want to increase the attendance. Hopefully that will occur soon.
Saturday, I spent all day at Fan Expo Dallas. It’s a very different
convention than Frightmare. While there are many fans that attend both conventions,
it’s mostly a different crowd for each show.
Fan Expo did better with the line management this year. Of course, they had a lot of repeat guests so the crowds might have been smaller.
Sunday, I split time between both shows. I got one autograph
from each show that day.
That’s the life of an autograph addict. Please take pity on
The Wife. She deserves better.
