Theo Rossi Alamo City ComicCon 2018

This was the last autograph I got up at Alamo City.  Theo Rossi was busy most of the day but near the end of the day, his line was short and I as able to pick up this one.  He stood in front of his table and causally greeted fans.  It was nice friendly encounter and I great way to end the day.

Fairuza Balk Alamo City ComicCon 2018

You probably know Fairuza Balk from The Craft or The Waterboy. Both classics.  I’m partial to The Waterboy. While The Wife will hate to admit it, she has been known to laugh during this movie. The Wife shake her head is wonder but she will laugh.

I was excited Fairuza was at the show. I was excited she had a Waterboy photo.  She was always smiling and chatty.

Masiela Lusha Alamo City ComicCon 2018

I’ll admit, I like the Sharknado movies. They are silly mindless B movies that do not take themselves seriously. I was amazed they go so much attention about being bad. Have people not watched the B movies from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s?  The Sharknado movies are no better or worse than those movies.

So I HAD to get Masiela Lusha when she was at this show. While she had a nice selection of photos, I liked this one best.

Henry Thomas Alamo City ComicCon 2018

I got Henry Thomas to sign the ‘Elliott photo before I watched The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. I think I would have had a tough decision about what to get signed. I really enjoyed Hill House. ET is so iconic. Maybe it is better that I didn’t see Hill House first. 

Again, another friendly actor.

Steve Whitmire Alamo City ComicCon

Steve Whitmire is the current voice of Kermit the Frog. He was a nice guy. He chatted with fans and listened to people talk about Sesame Street and their memories about the show.

Mary Gibbs Alamo City ComicCon 2018

Mary Gibbs is all grown up. She is a very pretty young lady.  Which means that monsters Inc was a long time ago. And that means I’m getting older with every passing second.

She was very friendly and talked about the night on the town the night before. She also mentioned she hoped to more time on San Antonio’s River Walk.

Scott Weinger and Christopher Barnes Alamo City Comic Con 2018

As I accumulated more voice actors, I noticed the age of the fans in line change.  For Mickey and goofy, it was Dad’s with the very young ones.

For Scott Weinger (Aladdin) and Christopher Barnes (Little Mermaid), the lines were filled with women about 35 to 45 years old.  These were the little girls that grew up and had crushes on these characters. 

Yes, some of the women were gushing while finally meeting the object of their dreams. I’m not judging. I have blown it a few times. It’s still funny to see and I do smile.

Bill Farmer and Bret Iwan Alamo City ComicCon 2018

As I mentioned, I got a few voice actors.  One of my fellow hounds asked if I cold get some autographs for him. Since I was in line for him, I figured I would get one for me too.

So I now have autographs from the current voice of Mickey Mouse (Bret Iwan) and Goofy (Bill Farmer).

Both were very nice guys.  The kids loved hearing the voices although they were confused as the voices was not coming from Mickey or Goofy but some ‘guy’. Also, the voices were not coming from a TV.

Natalia Cordova and Henry Simmons Alamo City ComicCon 2018

Slowly I’m amassing a large list of Marvel characters. And a lot are from Marvel Agents of Shield. Alamo City had both Natalia Cordova and Henry Simmons.

 

Natalia was quiet and quick.

Henry was chatty and outgoing.  He had biceps as large as my head (hyperbole). He asked abut my UofA shirt.  I asked if went there or lost money on them.  He laughed.  He said he had a friend that went there.

Jim Cummings Alamo City Comic Con 2018

This year I picked up a lot of voice actors.  Not my normal thing. Many of them are from the Disney world.

Jim Cummings has been the recent voice of both Winnie the Pooh and Tigger the Tiger. I could not pass him up.  He was nice. As with lots of voice actors, he had a variety of voices he had. And with that lot of photos.  I liked this one of Pooh.

Margaret Kerry Alamo City ComicCon 2018

‘Tink’ was at Alamo City.  The actress that was the ‘model’ for Tinker bell, Margaret Kerry, was signing.  I visited her table and she was a bundle of energy. At 89 years old, she took charge and sat me down (she stood the whole time) because I towered over her. With me seated, we were closer to looking each other in the eyes. 

I mentioned I missed her at SDCC a few years back. She told me about her trip way back then.

She got lost in San Diego. She ended up taking a took a pedicab to the convention center.  As she was trying to get her attendee badge, she was given the wrong directions.  Then she received more wrong directions when she was trying to find the room where she was a panelist.  As she finally got to the room, she was expecting 20 or 30 people but the door opened onto 500 people.  She was pleasantly overwhelmed.

As she was signing. She made me take a photo. California passed a law to authenticate autographs. It’s a silly thing that probably doesn’t make any difference. I was aware of the law and I don’t think it applied to ComicCons. I know no one at SDCC was doing this. I know that law did not apply to Texas but she was a law-abiding citizen and on a roll. I was NOT going to argue with Tinker Bell.

Isaac Hempstead Wright Alamo City Comic Con 2018

Game of Throne Actors are just starting to hit the convention circuit.  It’s was exciting to see Isaac HempsteadWright name on the guest list.

There were a lot of girls in line to see him. They were all very excited to see him. I did not know he was the girl crush type.   

He mentioned he saw see a little of San Antonio the night before. They went to the Riverwalk for dinner.  Yes, they had Mexican (Tex-Mex). What else do you eat when you visit San Antonio

Daphne Zuniga Alamo City Comic Con 2018

Alamo City had a second Spaceballs aIumi – Daphne Zuniga. She was friendly and stood in front of her table as she chatted with fans.

Rick Moranis Alamo City Comic Con 2018

Alamo City Comic Con had two rare signers for this show. Arnold Schwarzenegger (which I did not get as it was WAY too expensive) and Rick Moranis.  Rick was expensive but the price was more reasonable. I figured this was probably my only chance as he is something of a homebody.

Deciding on what to have him sign was tough. I love Ghostbusters and Honey I Shrunk the Kids. I’m a big SCTV fan too. But the best photo was from Spaceballs.

He was friendly but seemed surprised that so many people would come to see him. It looked like he was realizing the difference between hearing about a comic con and attending one. It’s not quite the same thing and he was adjusting to the reality.

As he signed, I thanked him for coming to San Antonio.  He asked if I lived there long. I told him I drove down from Dallas.  I got a confused look. That is expected.  Not everybody knows Texas geography. I told him it was a 5-hour drive – if I drive the speed limit.  The confusion did not leave his face.  I said it was a long drive but worth to get this autograph.  He smiled and thanked me for making the drive.

Warriors Alamo City 2017

It’s hard for me to be elegant when I talk about The Warriors.  I just Fan-Boy out too much.  The Warriors was a big reason I went to Alamo City ComicCon.  Yes, getting the Monster Squad mini poster signed by the monsters was a big reason too. But really, The Warriors or Monster Squad (I’m pantomiming a scale with my hands. One movie is in each hand.)?  It is no contest: The Warriors.

Alamo City had 7 cast members in attendance. (David Harris, Terry Michos, Doresy Wright, Deborah Van Valkenberg, Michael Beck, James Remar, and Thomas G Waites). Four of these actors I have seen before.  Here, in San Antonio, six of The Warriors themselves and Mercy are attending this convention. Of the missing Warriors, I might be able to see 2 more.  One has already passed away. This reunion is an exciting opportunity. 

I stressed before the show. I could not find something suitable for the cast to sign. There are lots of great photos and posters. Either the background is too dark which would lose the signatures or it is missing cast members. As the movie progresses, a few characters are lost and an additional character is added.  There isn’t a perfect picture with the 9 Warriors that include Mercy.  And if Mercy is in the image, a few of the Warriors are missing.

Oh, the dilemma Fan-Boys have!

When I got to the show, I scanned the actor’s tables to see if I could find anything suitable for the cast to sign. One of my fellow hounds walked with me. He was polite as I whined about my fruitless searches.  We both decided on a mini poster that Michael Beck had.  It was not perfect but is would work. I’m glad I went in that direction.

The mini poster was a black and while subway map of NYC. There was lots of room for people to sign and the autographs should not get lost in the image.

As I got the poster signed, I added some signed  8x10’s that I was missing from my collections. Some of the actors twisted my arm and MADE me get a selfie with them.  I must admit, I did like looking at them afterward.  Oh silly Fan-Boy!

Everyone was friendly. Yes, I say that all of the time. It’s still the truth. They seemed happy that people still remember and enjoy the movie.

Details are blurry on what I said to who. Thomas Waites said he thought he remembered me from Texas Frightmare.  I told Michael Beck I met him a couple of times in the past. I mentioned SDCC to Deborah and she said, God that was a long time ago.

Sean Young Alamo City 2017

A buddy had already helped me get a Sean Young autograph. It’s from the movie Blade Runner. What more could I want? Nothing really.

When we went to Alamo City, one of my fellow hounds was getting several items signed by her. She was chatty and outgoing and very helpful.  She was willing to sign anything and add any inscriptions.  At this encounter I got to see 2 (count them 2) Harrison Ford signed Blade Runner posters; she added her signature to both posters.  What a nerd buzz.

As we got items signed for our friend, we sent a lot of time at her booth. She talked about her tour company in Austin. She talked about her kids (grown).  She talked about other actors. She talked about other movies.  It was a lot of fun.  He husband was there and while he was quiet he was part of the conversations. We got to know her and she got to know us.

After we left, we went on to get other signatures. But I needed to come back. There was one photo on her table that distracted me. The photo was from Dr Jekyll and Mrs Hyde. I do remember seeing that at the theater with The Wife.

When I came back and chose the photo she laughed. The hubby smiled politely. Yes, we were that casual with each other.  I admitted this was not an iconic role but I liked the photo.  I my defense, I told her I already had her autograph on a Blade Runner photo.

As she signed, she turned to her husband and said, here is something you don’t know.  He looked interested. She was pregnant in the photo with their child.  She said you can see the baby bump. I told them will ever see a baby bump in that photo. They both laughed.

I still don’t see it.

John Caroll Lynch Alamo City 2017

John Carroll Lynch has been acting for a long time. He was acting long before I saw him on the Drew Carey Show. I will always think of him as Drew’s brother.  However, American Horror Story has given him an iconic character that will probably stay with him for a long time.  Well, at least on the convention circuit.

John sauntered back from his panel. He hadn’t eaten but he saw that people were already in line. He didn’t want them to come back so he asked for his food to be brought to him.

Most of the photos on his table were Twisty the Clown from American Horror Story.  I think he was surprised I mentored Drew Carey. I think that was a pleasant call back to the days of yore. It’s a causal encounter and he looks you in the eye as he listens. Before he signed he asked if he could add a line to the photo.  it was polite and it fit well with the encounter.

Riley Schmidt – Alamo City 2017

Riley Schmidt wasn’t on my radar.  I did not recognize his name. As one of my fellow hounds got his autograph, realized he was in Scream Queens.

Yes, I watched it. Stop judging.

So I stepped into his line. He was nice and gave me an extra photo that he signed. I think he was doing that with everyone.   We chatted about the show.  I also mentioned if I was more organized (code for saying I did not know who he was), I would have brought my Scream Queens poster to have his signature added to it.

Catherine Dyer and Randy Havens Alamo City 2017

With the new season of Strangers Things available, it’s surprising more actors from the show are not on the circuit. Alamo City ComicCon had both CatherineDyer and Randy Havens in attendance.

As Catherine and I chit chatted, I asked if she was going to be in season 2. She looked at me.  With a wry smile she said she was killed off.

Me: Oh Honey, I’m sorry. I truly don’t remember that.

Catherine: yes, they did it. So, I’m not coming back.

Me: awkward silence. Proverbial crickets in the background.

She was nice about. It was my fault for not having watched Strangers Things 5 times. It would also help if I didn’t play Words with Friends while watching TV…

I did not embarrass myself with Randy that way. I was just kept to the basics: Hi, love the show, thanks for coming to San Antonio, thanks, bye.

Frank Miller Alamo City ComicCon 2017 - Serendipity and being unprepared

After I got Michael Beach’s autograph, I was ready to go home. As I was wandering through the vendor aisles, I heard an announcement that Frank Miller, who was only scheduled to sign on Sunday, was going to do an additional signing while I was still there.

While that was exciting, I really didn’t want to pay the price they were charging for Sunday (a VIP pass that was rather pricey). Then they announced the price they were going to charge for this surprise signing.  It was greatly reduced from the VP price. This made the surprise more tempting.

I slowly made my way to the signing area. I expected a rather long line of fans already queued for this additional signing.  The line was 3 people deep.  I figured something was wrong. As I was scoping everything out, a lady can up to me and asked if I wanted to be part of the signing. She confirmed the price and that only 3 people were in line.  It seemed the fates were pushing me toward this.

Because this was NOT on my radar, I had nothing to get signed. So I franticly hit a few comic vendors looking for something not too pricey that was Sin City, 300, or Dark Night. No luck. The last vendor suggested something else he worked on. I don’t know comics. I was at the vendor’s mercy. He pulled a few comics out. I choose the DareDevil because I thought the signature would show well on the cover.  I’ll admit I didn’t even negotiate the price.

As I stood in the short line, the people next to me looked at the comic in my hand and nodded appreciatingly.  When I got it signed, Frank didn’t say a word. He did give me the big signature that the cover ‘demanded’. The guys sitting with Frank commented about the comic he signed. They seemed to think this was a good choice.

Within 20 minutes, I learned that Frank Miller was signing; reduced his fee; had  a short line; found something ‘interesting’ to sign; and headed back to my car. That was a great way to end the convention.
