I’ve never been to Retro Expo before. It’s a small convention for ‘collectors’ with just a few guests. Their focus is on collecting. It’s in Plano, which is convenient for me. Maybe a 30-minute drive and I'm also familiar with the area and the venue.
I got to the show about 45 minutes after it opened. AmyAllen was already at her table. A family
was in front of me and they were chit-chatting with Amy. They moved on and Amy gave me a big bright
smile. She signed.
As I was finishing with her, the other 2 guests I was interested
in arrived. John Morton had the shorter
line and I stepped in his first. He also was friendly and we chatted about the ‘old
days’ and some previous conventions at this venue.
Once I has John’s autograph, I moved on to Jett Lucas. By then, there were only 2 other people in line for him and then I was in front of Jett picking a photo to get signed.
Then Jett’s handler told the person taking the money that 'my money was no good’. I paused with a smile on my face trying to digest that comment and to come up with a funny repartee. After a long pause where everyone was looking at her for clarification, she said I went to the UofA. I looked down at my shirt and the UofA logo was proudly displayed. She added with a smile, that she was a Sun Devil. Cross State Rivalries are alive even when we cross the state borders.
She had graduated a few years ago. I told her I could be her
grandfather. Everyone laughed. The sad
thing, it’s true.
I must admit this show spoiled me. I was in and out within
30 minutes.
While this was a smaller show, it was the first one for me that was post-COVID. Most people didn’t wear masks and people seemed to be very happy
to do something fun.
